CAREER
Born Aug. 15th 1953 in J.W. von Goethe′s hometown Weimar/Germany, Wolfgang Hohlbein is Germany′s most successful author. His books have been translated into 37 languages.
One of the most versatile writers, he has published more than 200 novels and
sold more than 35 million copies in Germany and all over the world.
Having won numerous prizes, Hohlbein′s repertoire stretches from fantasy to horror, from children′s and teen books to historical topics as well as film related stories (e.g. Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean)
Regarded as the trailblazer of the new German genre "Phantastik" and fantasy, he is often compared to J.R.R. Tolkien or Michael Ende. His breakthrough success MAGIC MOON is surpassed only by Ende′s "Neverending Story" as most successful children′s fantasy book.
Hohlbein ranked No. 2 as "best fantasy author" in an online survey, surpassed only by
J.R.R. Tolkien and high above Terry Pratchett and other authors.
MILESTONES
1983:
- MAGIC MOON (Märchenmond) surpasses all expectations and becomes a long-running success in the sales charts. Sold over 4 million copies to date in Germany alone. Translated into more than 25 languages and sold in Asia, Europe and the U.S.
1993:
- THE DRUID GATE (Das Druidentor) remains a whole year on German best seller lists;
More than 2 million copies have been sold in Germany alone.
A TV Mini-Series is in production by Constantin Film
2005:
- 4 new Hohlbein books make it on the best seller lists of acclaimed news mags SPIEGEL, FOCUS, STERN (and other) - no other German author has come close
to achieving this. ANUBIS remains 6 months in a row on SPIEGEL's best seller list.
2008:
- The Chinese Wolfgang Hohlbein award was launched in Beijing. The Wolfgang Hohlbein award is the most important german literature award of a living german author, endowed in Germany with 10.000 Euro. In China there are nearly thirty books of Wolfgang Hohlbein available.
